Synopsis: St Patrick had driven all the snakes out of Ireland but not it seemed from London

Danny was so fed up he couldn’t go back to Ireland for St Patrick’s Day. Mark and Glen had plans with their loved ones and Danny as usual had work to do so he couldn’t even go home to be with his friends. He couldn’t think of anything more depressing right now. Oh no that was wrong, he could think of something to make it worse. His neighbours, the nice couple next door had gone back to Limerick for a week to spend the whole St Patrick’s festival with their family, yeah that made him feel worse, the lads had their families and what did he have to look forward to? Probably a night in the Irish bars a few streets away, trying to enjoy himself with strangers. Great, something to really look forward to now!

He got out of the lift in his exclusive apartment block, he liked it here, never any worries of people getting past security who shouldn’t be there, it was quiet a little haven after a busy day at work.

As he walked to the lift he saw a dark hair woman standing by his next door neighbours’ door with a key, he looked her up and down admiring her hour glass figure, and her long wavy hair looked so silky and perfect.

Hearing the lift doors closing Anna turned around and her dark eyes met with soulful hazel ones. She knew who he was, who didn’t? Plus Gemma had told her who lived next door; he was even better looking in the flesh, if that was ever possible.

Danny walked forwards and held his hand out to her.

“Ah you must be the friend checking the flat?”

She moved forwards and shook his hand, he had a firm handshake, firm but warm at the same time.

“Hi yes, I’m Anna, I’ve just come to check the flat and I got their post from the doorman.”

They both appeared very nervous with one and other. Danny stepped back and placed his key in his own door.

“Well it was very nice to meet you Anna, if you want anything………”

He paused and smiled.

“………. Well I’m next door.”

“Okay, bye!”

Danny walked inside his door and then thought of something, he opened the door and popped his head out just as Anna was going into the flat.

“By the way, I’m Danny.”

Once more she smiled at him, he loved her smile, and it was warm and playful.

“Yes I know, Nice to meet you Danny but I had better get on.”

Danny nodded, of course she did, why did a stunner like her want to waste her time on a lanky skinny git like him? Not only that his fame would put off most genuine women.

The days passed by and they always managed to meet up, either in the car park or the hall way but sadly their conversations were limited to Hello how are you, how was your day, and how the weather was. Danny wanted to ask her out for a drink but they never seemed to talk long enough for that to happen, but he loved the few words they exchanged and she was beautiful, natural beauty with minimal make up and also casually dressed, never over the top just in jeans or a skirt and top or jumper and he liked that.

So here was St Patrick’s Day and he hadn’t even seen her today, how sad was that? No friends to party with and he hadn’t even seen her beautiful smile today. Gemma and John were due back tomorrow and then Anna would be just a memory of the beautiful girl in the hallway. How sad was this? Danny O’Donoghue, all alone and no real friends to party with, the papers would love that he thought to himself. He threw his keys on the coffee table and flicked the kettle on to make a coffee.

Suddenly he heard a dreadful scream from next door, not just a little girly scream but a full bodied terrified scream. He rushed from his flat and straight into next door, he was met with the sight of Anna standing on one of the chairs at the dining table still screaming.

Danny looked around the room quickly but couldn’t see anything.

“What’s wrong, what is it?”

Anna pointed toward the sofa with a shaking hand, this made Danny a little nervous, it sounded a bit scary but wanting to appear the brave man he walked closer looking all the time.

“Oh God be careful Danny please, it’s awful, it’s huge.”

This made Danny feel more worried so he grabbed the bronze bust on the table and held it up. As he walked around Anna screamed again and pointed to the floor.

“Look, it’s there!”

Danny jumped slightly but looked to the floor and saw the six foot snake slither along the floor, putting the bust back he sighed.

“Sid, how did you get out this time?”

He followed the big snake and with a lot of effort he picked him up the snake coiled himself around Danny’s arm and waist. Anna looked horrified, Danny walked towards her holding Sid towards her.

“Look, It’s okay, it’s only Sid, he’s a Royal Python, he won’t hurt you, he loves people.”

“NO!”

Anna shouted holding her hands put towards him to ward him off and her eyes half closed. Danny stroked the snakes head and left the room chatting to it as if it were a puppy.

When he came back Anna was still on the chair, Danny walked up to her and held his hand out to help her down but she was so scared, the fear was evident in her eyes. Danny took her hand gently and spoke in soothing tones.

“Come on it’s alright, Sid is back in his vivarium, and he’s a devil for getting out, he’s way too smart. I keep telling Gemma to get someone to secure the door better…… It’s safe I promise, did they not tell you about Sid?”

Anna shook her head as she stepped down, Danny instinctively took her in his arms and rubbed her back gently with one hand while he stroked her hair with the other, he scent was intoxicating and he breathed in deeply.

“Come on let’s get you to mine and I’ll pour you a brandy.”

Anna sneered her nose up slightly.

“Could I just have a coffee please?”

“Of course you can.”

Danny took her hand and led her from the flat, locking the door and handing the key back to her as they went. Danny sat Anna on the sofa; her eyes were darting around the room.

“No pets I promise, only Mark and Glen when they come over!”

She nodded still a little nervous so Danny set about making the coffee, maybe this was his chance to speak to her. He brought the coffee back and sat them on the coffee table as he sat himself beside her.

“How are you feeling now?”

Anna smiled at him, she felt more relaxed now, annoyed however that she didn’t know about the snake, and Gemma knew she hated them.

“Yeah I’m okay, thanks to you, I don’t know what I would have done without you I really don’t, my own private St Patrick driving the snakes out.”

They both sat and laughed at the hilarity of the situation they found themselves in. They chatted a little about things they knew about Gemma and John and about their friends and family. They found they got on well almost like they had known each other for a long time.

Danny sat on the edge of the sofa now as he looked into her dark eyes.

“I don’t suppose you are free tonight are you?”

Anna didn’t answer straight away and Danny took this as a sign and nodded.

“No of course, that’s fine it was just a thought, of course you are busy on Paddy’s day, I mean who wouldn’t be…….. Well except me of course and …..”

Danny was rambling now and Anna found this cute, she placed her index finger to her lips.

“Shushhhhhhhh!”

She whispered and Danny did as she had said.

“I am very free tonight and have no plans at all, except a night in with my cat.”

Danny’s smile lit the whole room up now and it became infectious making her smile with him.

“Would you like to come with me to head round some Irish bars?”

Anna nodded as Danny now as they both had silly smiles on their faces.

“Id love to, I really would.”

“Fantastic.”

Reluctantly Anna got to her feet.

“Well I guess I’d better go home to change then.”

Anna got to her feet and walked to the door, Danny took hold of her hand.

“Oh I best have your address them I can pick you up.”

Danny got a piece of paper and a pen so Anna could write her address down for him. He studied it when she handed it over.

“Great I’ll pick you up about nine?”

She nodded at him feeling the excitement build up in her tummy, hardly able to believe the good looking man she had met in the hall way had been her knight in shining armour saving her and now asking her on a date.

Danny couldn’t resist her luscious lips any longer although he didn’t want to frighten her off so soon, he leant forwards and gave her a warm peck on the lips, but the kiss felt wonderful. Anna reluctantly stepped away and walked to the lift.

“I’ll see you at nine then?”

Danny nodded his confirmation to her.

“I’ll be there nine on the dot you wait and see.”

Both giggled with each other now as Anna stepped into the lift and the door closed.

Danny sighed and rested his head on the door frame. Maybe this wasn’t going to be a bad St Patrick’s Day after all. He had such a good feeling about Anna, she belonged in his future he just knew she did. He walked in his flat and closed the door. Smiling naughtily like a little boy he thought how glad he was Gemma had phoned last night saying she had forgotten to feed Sid and that Anna was terrified of snakes so could Danny get the doorman to let him in. He fed Sid of course he did, he liked Sid but just maybe he left the door open, forgetting to close it properly. St Patrick’s Day was looking up.

“Thanks Sid!”

He smiled as he headed off to find something good to wear to the lovely lady..
